Have you ever seen a kozioł bagpipe being played? If not, Zbąszyń is the place to experience it. Even if no kozioł player happens to be around (several masters live in this town), you will certainly enjoy spending time by the clear lake and strolling among the ruins of the former fortress. Located in the western part of the Wielkopolska Region, Zbąszyń offers relaxation and outdoor activities amid scenic landscapes of forests and lakes, as well as a chance to explore the region’s unique traditions.
To the rhythm of the kozioł
Zbąszyń belongs to the Kozioł Region, named after the traditional folk instrument of western Wielkopolska (the word kozioł means a ‘goat’). This tradition is commemorated by a statue of a kozioł player on the market square and at the Museum of the Zbąszyń Land and the Kozioł Region, where visitors can explore an exhibition of musical instruments, including the kozioł – a type of bagpipe unique to Wielkopolska.
Zbąszyń’s music school is the only one in Poland to specialize in teaching folk instruments. The town is also home to the country’s only Polish Folk Philharmonic. An important cultural event of the region is the Biesiady Koźlarskie festival.
Town by the lake
Zbąszyń promotes itself under the slogan ‘the town by the lake’, and this is an apt description indeed. The vast and scenic Zbąszyńskie Lake offers opportunities for water sports and fishing. Visitors can relax at the holiday resort, which features a beach, swimming area, equipment rental, and campsite, or stay in one of the nearby hotels. Canoeists will also find the lake ideal, as it forms part of the Obra River canoe trail. Cyclists and runners can enjoy the trail that circles the lake.
In summer, a water tram operates on Zbąszyńskie Lake, departing from a small marina beside the campsite. Watercraft can also be hired independently, including boats, kayaks, pedal boats, and SUP boards. Those who prefer larger vessels can make use of the sailing club in the northern part of the lake.
