Koło Castle

The picturesque, slightly romantic ruins of Koło Castle are situated just above the Warta River. During the reign of King Casimir the Great, the castle was bound to defend a strategic crossing over the river.

The castle was founded by the king in the mid-14th century, as mentioned in the chronicles of Jan Długosz. The building’s foundations were made of stone and the walls were brick. The castle had a massive tower. Even its ruins, being 16 meters high, make a huge impression.

In the Middle Ages, the castle in Koło held knightly assemblies and after the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, the most important decisions regarding relations with the Teutonic Order were made. Two centuries later, the Poles mediated with the Swedish King Charles X Gustav, which ended in failure. As a result, the Swedes attacked the Republic of Poland, and during their retreat, they destroyed the castle. It has never been restored to its former splendor.
