Great History
There’s a popular saying that Poland “started right here” in Wielkopolska-and it’s absolutely true! After all, this is the birthplace of the nation’s very first rulers and kings. You can hunt for traces of history dating back over a thousand years along the Piast Trail, in Poznań, Gniezno, or on the island of Ostrów Lednicki.
But that’s just the beginning; the centuries that followed left behind countless treasures. We’re talking ultra-lavish aristocratic residences, fairytale castles, gorgeous historic townhouses, churches bursting with Baroque art, and-of course-the most beautiful town hall in Poland, right in Poznań. History here isn’t just about old monuments, though. It’s also alive in the steam trains that have been continuously carrying passengers for 150 years , and the vintage windmills that still stand as proud symbols of the region.
Great Adventure
“Adventure” means something different to everyone. For some, it’s a peaceful, hours-long bike ride far away from the city crowds. For others, it’s cruising through the city center on a century-old tram. And some find their thrill getting a little muddy and splashed while kayaking down a wildly twisting river.
The best part? You can experience all of this right here in Wielkopolska. And the list goes on! Spectacular night aviation and hot-air balloon shows? Check. Venturing 600 meters underground into a real mine? Check. Racing on the country’s newest go-kart track? You bet. Deep-woods trekking in search of atomic bunkers? Absolutely possible!

The perfect spot for a digital detox is the Noteć Forest (Puszcza Notecka)-the largest woodland area in Poland, where you can hike for hours without crossing paths with another soul. Getting a phone signal here is a challenge, too! Then there is our “Land of 100 Lakes,” the ultimate destination for summer relaxation. Whether you love cycling, lounging on the beach, or literally hugging trees-you can do it all here. Top it off with fantastic fresh-caught fish dishes and, more recently, locally produced wine.
A Taste of Tradition
What comes to mind when you think of Wielkopolska cuisine? You’ll probably say pyry (our local word for potatoes) and the now-legendary St. Martin’s croissant.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Our regional cuisine is one of the best-preserved culinary traditions in Poland. It’s famous for roast duck (and roast goose in the autumn), local dumplings, potato pancakes, roasted pork knuckle, and fresh asparagus in the spring. Autumn brings wild mushrooms from the pine forests and pumpkin (locally called korbol), which we turn into a sublime soup.
Have you ever heard of Grodzisk beer? It hails from Grodzisk Wielkopolski and is the only beer style completely native to Poland. Today, we have over a dozen regional craft breweries running. On top of that, winemaking has absolutely boomed in recent years, with the number of local vineyards climbing close to 40.

We are located right in the heart of the country, with excellent transport links from almost every direction. This also makes Wielkopolska the perfect place for a road-trip stopover -though you should definitely plan your holiday to stay with us for at least a few days!
Getting here is a breeze: it’s just over an hour and a half from Wrocław, two hours from Łódź, just under three hours from Warsaw, and about three hours from Gdańsk. It’s just as close for international travelers-you can drive from Berlin to Poznań in two and a half hours, or catch a direct train from Prague and be here in about five.
