Probably one of the incredible sights in Poland. The basilica of Our Lady in Licheń (near the city of Konin) is – by some sources – the 6 th largest church in the World. But not only its size matters. The lavish decorations and magnificent golden dome make even greater impression.
Its construction started in 1994 and was finished in 2004. The temple has five naves, one of the largest domes and the highest church tower in Poland. It is full of symbolic elements. For example 12 columns represent the twelve apostles, while 33 steps leading inside make a metaphor of the number of Christ’s life. The main purpose of the church is to house the miraculous painting of Our Lady of Sorrows. Licheń is, along with Częstochowa, one of the main pilgrimage sites in Poland.
Inside you may visit two separate churches. The top one is designed as the main temple, while the lower level is occupied by three chapels. The most significant element in this part are hundreds of tablets, each bearing the name of one of the donors. another must see is the tower, reaching 141,5 meters, with an observation deck on the top. You may access it using an elevator, but if you feel sporty you may also try the stairs.
