The Royal-Imperial Route is Poznań’s main tourist and cultural trail. It tells the story of the city itself and the forty generations of residents who have shaped it, passing through some of its most fascinating corners.
Walking along the main axis of the route, you will encounter Poznań’s most important sites and historical figures. You will trace the city’s history from its earliest settlements and the Piast stronghold, through the burgher tenement houses, to the monumental 19th-century buildings. The main route through the historic city is marked by panels featuring a crown symbol.
To explore a particular part of old Poznań in more detail and uncover its hidden stories, you can follow routes branching out from the main axis. You will discover the ancient Cathedral Island – Ostrów Tumski, find traces of medieval and early modern Poznań in the Old Town, and see both the grandeur and lesser-known aspects of the modernising 19th-century Śródmieście district.
The Royal-Imperial Route can be explored using a series of free brochures or a dedicated book guide. A children’s guide has also been created for young explorers. Brochures are available at Porta Posnania and the Tourist Information Centre on the Old Market Square.
