Parowozownia Gniezno

Gniezno locomotive depot

The Gniezno locomotive depot is one of the largest of its kind not only in the Greater Poland, but also in the entire country. Its history began in 1875, just three years after the construction of the railway line connecting Poznań with Bydgoszcz and Toruń. Over the course of almost 150 years, two impressive locomotive sheds, a turntable, a water tower and a power plant were built on the depot’s premises.

Since 2010, the Gniezno locomotive depot has been looked after by the Gniezno Association of Railway Enthusiasts, which carries out restoration work and guides visitors around the facility. One of the sheds and the areas around the buildings are open to tourists. Everything seems frozen in time, as though the railway workers had just gone home for the weekend and were about to come back at any moment.

Visits are available exclusively with a guide.
