The small town of Łobżenica, located in the northern part of the Wielkopolska Region, retains the authentic atmosphere of a traditional small town, where church bells and tower chimes mark the hours. From the upper floors of t townhouses, visitors can gaze at nearby fields glowing yellow with rapeseed and red with poppies among fields of grain. Łobżenica is also an excellent base for cycling and kayaking trips.
In search of the sacred
The area’s main attraction is the Marian sanctuary in Górka Klasztorna, located just outside town. According to numerous legends and historical accounts, it is the oldest Marian sanctuary in Poland. Legend has it that apparitions occurred here as early as 1079, establishing its enduring appeal to pilgrims. Today, Górka Klasztorna is a vast pilgrimage complex, where Baroque art and architecture blend harmoniously with folk religious traditions.
Kayaking
Łobżenica and its surroundings, particularly its agritourism farms, form an ideal base for kayaking. Start with the Łobżonka River, which flows through the town. It’s challenging and best suited to experienced paddlers. Expect numerous weirs, fallen trees, and floodplains. The reward, however, is magnificent scenery far from major settlements.
A little further west flow the Gwda, Rurzyca and Głomia rivers. Like the Łobżonka, the Głomia challenges paddlers, but rewards them with views of hydroelectric plants, dams, and historic mills – some still powered by the river.
Cycling
Cycling enthusiasts will appreciate the area’s varied routes. Gently undulating landscapes and green hills provide pleasant variety.
The standout route – well signposted and partly running along a dedicated cycle path – leads from Łobżenica to Osiek nad Notecią. Here, you can explore the fascinating Open-Air Museum of Folk Architecture and discover the meadows and wetlands along the Noteć River.
