The Gwda River is one of the most important rivers in northern Greater Poland and, at same time, a place full of surprises. This is due to its diverse landscape and numerous water facilities and structures, such as mills and hydro power stations. The kayaking route on the Gwda is well-developed and well-marked. It shouldn’t cause any trouble for experienced canoeists, but it can be somewhat challenging for beginners.
The Gwda is the right tributary of the Noteć River, the longest of them all, as it’s 145 km long in total. It flows into the Noteć in the village of Ujście, while its source is located near the village of Białe, close to Biały Bór. The river current is rapid and the water flow is relatively large for a lowland river. Adrenaline lovers value the fast current between Płytnica and Krępsk.

Week in a canoe
It takes at least six days to travel the entire river distance. But if were to go only for a weekend trip, then two sections are recommended: the more difficult one from Lędyczek to Płytnica, and the slightly easier one from Płytnica to Ujście.
The river has sections rich in rapids and meanders. Sometimes it flows through deep valleys, and at other times through forests, meadows and fields. In its upper course, it forms a shallow and rather narrow mountain stream, while closer to its confluence with the Noteć River, it’s deeper with a wide river bed.

River Full of History
History buffs will note that along the river runs the so-called forward position of the Pomeranian Wall, German fortifications built before World War II. The most popular attraction is the partially destroyed bridge, which wasn’t blown up as planned in the final months of the war.
The highlight of the Gwda River is the hydro power plants located on it. Most of them create dam lakes, which require portaging canoes. However, it isn’t as burdensome as it might seem.
It’s also worth stopping for longer in Piła – the largest city in northern Greater Poland. The Gwda flows through its city center, winding around a beautiful park on an island. It’s a great opportunity to unkink a bit, go for ice cream, or grab some lunch.
