Sieraków

Sieraków is often described as the heart of the Land of 100 Lakes. The town is nestled between two large lakes – Jaroszewskie and Lutomskie – the Warta Valley, and, on the opposite bank of the river, the Noteć Forest. Even the journey there offers spectacular scenery. But Sieraków is not only a hub for tourist trails and an ideal spot for water sports; it also boasts a Gothic castle, a timber-framed church, and a renowned horse stud farm.

Around the Market Square

The Baroque Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the largest and most prominent historic building in Sieraków, distinguished by its impressive towers. Its 17th-century interior has been preserved almost unchanged. In the church’s crypt, remarkably well-preserved sarcophagi of the Opaliński family were discovered, including coffin portraits that offer a glimpse of the faces of the town’s former lords. After careful restoration, they were transferred to a chapel in Sieraków Castle.

Nearby stands another church – a timber-framed Evangelical chapel dating from the late 18th century. It is one of the few unaltered buildings of this type in the Wielkopolska Region. For many years it was neglected, but thanks to the efforts of the local municipality, it has been beautifully restored and now houses a library.

Sieraków Castle

Alongside the Bernardine Church, the castle is the most distinctive building in Sieraków and one of the few medieval castles in the Wielkopolska Region preserved in this form to this day. It is impossible to miss, whether viewing it from the Market Square or while floating down the Warta River. The castle was restored at the end of the 20th century and converted into a museum.

The exhibition presents the history of the town and its surroundings from the earliest times to the present day. Particularly noteworthy are the Opaliński family sarcophagi, originally discovered in the church crypt. In front of the castle stands a replica cannon, and a tourist information centre is also located on site.

By the lakes

Above all, Sieraków is a destination for waterside relaxation. To the south of the town lie two excellent lakes, each with a very different character. Jaroszewskie Lake is ideal for water sports such as boating, kayaking, water skiing, or simply sunbathing. In contrast, the elongated Lutomskie Lake is perfect for forest walks and birdwatching – keen eyes might even spot a hunting white-tailed eagle.

Walking and cycling paths connect the town to the lakes. Numerous restaurants operate in the area, and several leisure centres and hotels are located directly on the lakeshore. There are also a few local wineries nearby.
