The Noteć is the largest river in northern Greater Poland, popular not only among kayakers but also among motor yacht owners. The water trail is considered easy, even very easy, due to the river’s regulation. What’s more, this picturesque route features many attractions such as locks and is known as an excellent spot for birdwatching.
Kayaking on the Great Loop
The Noteć, together with the Warta River and the so-called Konin lake and canal system, creates the longest water trail in Poland – the 690 km Great Waterway Loop of Greater Poland. The lower Noteć, from Nakło to Santok, is a part of the International Waterway E70, which leads to the Vistula River, via the Bydgoszcz Canal and the lower Brda River.
It takes about 10 days to complete the whole route. Launching is possible in every town along the Noteć River, but highly recommended, well-prepared marinas are located in Drawsko, Czarnków and Nakło. What’s important, the river is easy to navigate, even for beginners.
In Nakło, the Noteć connects with the Bydgoszcz Canal. Along the entire 137-km regulated stretch, there are as many as 14 water steps, more than anywhere else in Greater Poland and the surrounding area, making them one of the main attractions of the route. However, there’s no need to leave the kayak to lock through them, as each step is operated by weirs or locks, many of which are historic. Please note that using them isn’t free of charge.
Moor and explore
A great idea is to spend a bit more time on the trail, making a break in interesting towns along the route, especially those ones with professional marinas, and explore the surrounding area.
In Nakło, you should definitely visit the beautiful market square with its elegant townhouses. In Ujście, climb the high riverbank to find the observation tower offering magnificent panoramic views of the area. It’s worth dedicating some extra time to explore Czarnków, whose town center has preserved its medieval urban layout. The town is also famous for its impressive Gothic church and old brewery.
