Środa District Railway

It is one of the last preserved narrow-gauge railways in Poland, offering visitors rides in historic carriages pulled by a steam locomotive. Clouds of steam and smoke from the chimney, the whistle of a conductor dressed in a slightly old-fashioned uniform, and the screech of the brakes – this is the atmosphere of the Środa District Railway. Rides are available every weekend during spring and summer.

Construction of the railway began in 1898, initiated by estate owners interested in transporting sugar beets. At its peak, the line extended for approximately 90 km. Today, 14 kilometres of the line have survived, which is more than enough for a romantic steam-powered journey.

The ride from Środa Wielkopolska to Zaniemyśl takes about an hour. During the journey, the train stops several times, allowing passengers to step out briefly and take photographs. Everything along the route has a retro feel – the staff uniforms, station signs, and even the cardboard tickets for the ride.

The stop at Zaniemyśl station is long enough to enjoy ice cream or visit a patisserie before returning to Środa. In the summer season, the train runs three times a day, allowing for a longer stay in Zaniemyśl. This makes it an ideal spot for lunch or a picnic on the beach by one of the nearby lakes.

Near the Środa District Railway line, you’ll find the Gzub Brewery in Annopol. But it is more than just a place where excellent beer is produced. It also has a year-round beer garden and its own campsite. Visitors can tour the brewery and participate in one of the many beer events held there.
